Japan court upholds sterilization to register gender change
The biggest story of the week emerging from the global queer news was the decision by the Japanese Supreme Court to uphold the legal gender recognition procedure. This requires that people wishing to be recognized legally as a different gender must be sterilized. There is a great piece at Human Rights Watch which goes into the background of Law 111 and it’s requirements. Although the judges kept the law in place their additional opinion noted that the law should continue to be reviewed as attitudes continue to change.
